This work explores the relationship between the body and technology in the context of industrial production,
relating to issues of occupational health. It looks at the idea of the
vulnerability of the body, as something soft and penetrable, in contrast
with the hard-edged surfaces and effects of technology.
I'm
fascinated by the hazards of work and the amount of abuse the body is
subjected to by exposure to various chemicals, gases, noise, vibration,
temperature etc., and how, despite the increasing sophistication of
modern safety measures, people are still being gradually disabled or
killed by their work - their bodies are treated like expendable
commodities in the interests of 'progress'.
